The end of content farms?

By now I’m sure you all have heard about Google’s “farmer” algorithm update that was recently launched to get the content farms out of the top of the search results. This shouldn’t have come to a surprise to anybody as there were a lot of warning signs leading up to this, and even Matt Cutts wrote a post about this pending change to improve search quality on the offical Google blog. In this post he sited that many people were becoming dissatisfied with the search results they were getting, so it was time for the big G to take some action to try and remove this spam from the top results.

Well they did a pretty good job of it, by eliminating many sites with low quality content. Here’s a screen shot from sistrix showing some of the hardest hits sites from this update:

As you can see from this chart there’s alot of content farms that somehow slipped through the cracks of previous algorithm updates, but not this time, they were hit pretty hard. There was even some “newer” spam sites that were taken out, which quite frankly I was surprised that they even made it up to the level they did (because their content was so bad).

All of this is great but I find a few things a little bit odd, as I feel there should have been at least a couple more sites included with these “content farm” sites and somehow they came out of this as winners by actually gaining traffic despite the quality of their content severely degrading over the past few years.

So what’s the bottom line? How does this effect other sites, maybe even your site? Well if you have taken the time and went through the trouble of creating high quality content, and haven’t been scraping other websites to get it then you’ll most likely be fine. Or maybe you’ll even gain a few positions in the SERPs.

Do you Write Right?

As I have mentioned many times before success with a search engine optimization campaign greatly depends upon high quality content. That’s because consumers and search engines alike are able to easily discern poorly written or keyword-stuffed web content, there can be no more important consideration for your business’s success than superior quality content. However, even the brightest of us sometimes make embarrassing mistakes when writing content that can send our readers packing and dramatically decrease our page rankings. Simple grammar, word choice, and spelling mistakes can make a statement about the author or business that may not be true; but we must remember that perception is everything to a consumer. The following are the most common of these simple mistakes to avoid when crafting SEO, SMM, or SEM web content.

In general, the best practice for SEO content creation is not to write as you would speak. In the following examples, it will be apparent why natural speech and the written language do not necessarily coincide with one another:

SEO writing tip #1: THEY’RE, THERE, and THEIR

Getting these words mixed up is one of the most common mistakes made when writing, not just writing for search engine optimization purposes. However, it’s easy to understand how to use these words:

THEY’RE- This is a conjunction, which means it is two words put together- THEY and ARE. Therefore, you would only use this to refer to a group of people or things that “are” something or another collectively.

THERE- This word refers to a specific place or a reference to a certain thing: “Go over there and see if they’re still serving dinner.” Or, “There are too many words in this online article.”

THEIR- This refers to the possessive form of a group of people: “Their SEO web content is really great.” Or, “There was something about their web content that was compelling.”

Following closely with these three words are YOU’RE and YOUR, where the former always is a conjunction that means YOU ARE, and the latter refers possessively to another person: “Where are your online articles posted?” Or, “Is your website traffic improving?”

SEO writing tip #2:TO, TOO, and TWO

These words are often confused when written, however the difference between them is very clear and easy to remember:

TWO- The number 2, and no other use ever.

TOO- This word is used as a qualifier, in addition to something or someone else: “I want to go too!” Or, “You’re writing SEO content too?”

TO- This word isn’t necessarily needed in the spoken or written word, and in some languages, such as Russian, it doesn’t exist. However, we do use it in English as a way to indicate a purpose, action, direction, or any number of things. For instance, examine the following sentence: “Would you like to go to the store to get some of those pills that you can use to cure a headache?” In reality, we don’t need to use the word, as the sentence retains its meaning without the word “to.” Nevertheless, is in an integral part of English and should never be confused with the two other similar words listed above.

SEO writing tip #3: You never TRY AND do anything, ever.

Very few people- even the best writers, are aware of this mistake in speech and writing. You don’t try AND do anything: you try TO. If you were to take the meaning of “try and” and dissect it, it really means two things independently: 1.) You’re going to try. 2.) And then you are going to do something else. For instance, examine the following sentences:

“I am going to try and write very high quality SEO content.”
“I am going to try to write very high quality SEO content.”

See the difference? While some people do make this distinction in their writing, almost everyone says “try and” during regular speech. While this might be quite common, it doesn’t make it correct.

SEO writing tip #4: WOULD OF and SHOULD OF is not correct grammar

Both of these terms don’t exist in proper speech or writing. This is because both are actually mispronunciations of the conjunctions WOULD’VE and SHOULD’VE. These conjunctions in turn are actually two separate words: WOULD HAVE and SHOULD HAVE. Therefore, it can be easily seen that terms like “would of” are actually just really bad grammar and speech.

SEO writing tip #5: THEN and THAN

Many online writers use these words interchangeably, but they actually have two very different meanings. The word “then” is a term that describes something that follows. For instance: “If you have poor quality SEO web content, then you will probably have poor page rankings.” Or, “We planned our SEO strategies and then set about putting them into practice.” Conversely, the word “than” almost always introduces something that is different from something else in some way, as in the following sentences: “Their SEM content is much better than ours.” Or, “His website is much more complex than mine.”

SEO writing tip #6: I before E

Most of us learn this simple rule in grade school, but quickly forget: “I before E, except after C, or when sounding like “A” as in neighbor or weigh.” If you ever question how to spell words like receive or reprieve or sleigh, just remember this simple rhyme and you’ll always get it right.

SEO writing tip #7: ANYWAYS is not a word

This word is used in common speech all the time, but it is incorrect when spoken and when written. The word should never be plural, as it simply doesn’t need to be: “Anyway, I’m going to get this social media content written now.” Or, “They didn’t ask for LSI keywords, but we provided them anyway.” In order to clarify this so that you can always remember it, there is never a time that the word “anyways” is appropriate. It is always wrong.

Some people might think that these simple mistakes don’t really warrant proper attention, as the reader will probably still understand the overall meaning of the content. However, all of these mistakes send signals that no business should be sending. Intelligent people will see these mistakes as a lack of education or poor attention to details. Either way, those are not traits you should be associating yourself with. Additionally, proper grammar and word choices help your SEO content to flow more naturally and convey precisely the meaning that you are intending. Poorly written content that features mistakes such as these will always be taken less seriously by consumers and search engines alike, leaving your content less likely to be linked by others, and consumers less likely to opt for your services.

Six Link Building Tips

Link building is one of the most important tasks when it comes to your web sites SEO, but unfortunately there always seems to be some confusion about this task. So in today’s I hope to clear things up a little bit by pointing out things that many webmasters seem to focus on but they maybe hindering their progress instead. Also I will point out a few areas that often times seem to be overlooked, these are very simple and maybe this is the reason they are often left undone, or not properly done.

Social Links

These day it seems that every is all about getting recognized on social networking sites, while this may bring you a big influx of traffic this is temporary and often times the traffic is very poor quality. I have found that social traffic often doesn’t translate into much more than your visitor count raising, instead I would suggest that you spend more time on developing quality links.

If you spend more time developing and earning links from websites that not just anybody can get a link from your efforts will be rewarded ten fold. If you get tons of links from social networking sites, they are most likely all going to be no follow and pretty all of them will be gone in a few months besides.

Where’s your link?

Believe it or not where your link is located makes a difference in how much it’s worth. Think about a link in the footer of a website, how much attention do you think it gets down there from human visitors? Probably not much right? Search engines take this into consideration when calculating how much a backlink is worth. So the higher up on the page it is the better it will be, there is also some speculation on whether or not it’s better being located in the meat of the content or off on the side in a menu.

Quantity

How many links are already on the page? This makes a difference because each link takes a little piece of the pie, and as you can imagine the more there are the smaller your slice of the pie is going to be. So look for pages that don’t have a ton of links on them so you can get as much of the pie as possible. Also it’s important to keep in mind that search engines will often divide the pie including “nofollow” links as well, so don’t think that just because most of the other links are “nofollow” that you’ll be getting more of the pie.

Does the link make sense?

By this I mean are the two pages similar? Does it make sense, and will it be helpful to the visitors to link to the other page? If your page is about snowboarding you probably shouldn’t be going out looking to get backlinks from a webpage about teddy bears. However you could look to get some links from a webpage about cold weather gear back to your page or site about snowboarding.

Anchor text

This quite possibly one of the most important factors to consider when searching for backlinks. The anchor text should describe what the visitor will find on the next page should they click on the link. When building backlinks you should avoid anchor text like “click here”, or else you might end up ranking for it!

Links from high PR pages

This is probably the most common problem out there, most webmasters think that they have to only get links from pages that have high page rank. The truth is that if they spend all their time just looking for links from high PR pages they are missing a lot of opportunities to get other great links. It’s important to remember that when getting backlinks, that the amount of people that will be seeing and possibly clicking on your link is just as important if not more important than the pages rank that your link is on.

Mass Developing Domain Names

I would like to add my two to a post that I was reading over on Domain Name News earlier today, the post was about the Flawed Mass Domain Development Model. I agree with Mr. Sumner that it’s not possible to develop domain in mass on the cheap as everybody seems to think is the way ahead. The truth is most of the companies offering these services at these unbelievably low prices are “snake oil” solutions, that may end up hurting you in the long run.

As he mentioned in his post your parked domain name will almost certainly not show up in any search engine results, meaning that your domain probably won’t receive much traffic. This also means that your domain name won’t receive much attention from potential buyers either, leaving you looking for a way to get you domain more attention.

This will most likely lead you down the path that takes you to domain development, and of course as most people usually are you go for the lowest priced offer that promises you the world, but the truth is most of these “services” will setup you up with a site that has a couple hundred farmed articles, that certainly won’t help you in your quest of high search engine rankings. As I have covered before in this blog when it comes to gaining search engine rankings, what counts is killer content, backlinks, and some interaction with other webmasters in the same niche as your site.

What I am trying to say is that you shouldn’t get yourself lured in by the “snake oil” sales man while his product may sound amazing I promise you it’s not. You are better off spending a few extra dollars and get things done the right way.

We here at The Search Ninja offer domain development services done the right way, we will sit down and talk with you about which direction you would like to take your domain name development, and create a site, and custom content that will draw in visitor’s and encourage people to link back to your site. Of course all of this comes at a price though, depending on how many articles you would like, and any other services that would aid in the domain development. If your interested and would like to find out more about our services, you can inquire for more information here.

Domaining

It’s not what it used to be, not that long ago you could buy a domain give it a standard parking page put it up for sale and bam you might have just made yourself a small fortune. Sounds pretty easy right? Unfortunately those days seem to be long gone, now you will need to spend a serious amount of time and effort to even have a chance of selling your domain name for a healthy profit. There are a few different ways you could go about doing this, but either way you will be ending up with the same basic end results.

Let’s go ahead and cover a few basic ways to improve the value of your domain name, shall we? Any way you end up going you will need to create a basic website that creates and adds value to the web so that people will want to keep coming back and checking your site out. Because let’s face it, if you have spent any time around domain auction sites such as sedo, flippa, etc. you will notice that majority of the sites creating interest in buyers are the ones that already receive a healthy dose of organic traffic. And as many people including myself preach the best way to create organic traffic is with quality web content, which still holds true when trying to gain traffic for your domain names. Now as I mentioned earlier there are a few ways to create a quality site for your domain so let me list them out now:

  • Develop a mini content site: This method would include developing some high quality articles and setting your site up around them. This method requires you to do some keyword research for the targeted market and then creating high quality SEO content around these keywords. As of this writing we are working closely with tweak labs to develop a few mini-content site templates that we will then offer either separately or as a complete package. These templates will be specially designed for high quality on page SEO, and as an added bonus they will also feature deliberately placed ads that will help generate a substantial amount of advertising revenue will waiting for the sale of your domain name. More info to come when these packages become available.
  • Affiliate API store: There are a few different sites out there that provide an API so that you can setup your own online store right on your domain name, the two big names are Amazon, and Ebay. The good news about this method is that it’s relatively easy to setup, and most of the content that will help to draw repeat visitors is provided. Even with most of the content being provided via the API it would also be helpful to create or buy some unique content for your site to help set it apart and create extra traffic while you are trying to sell your domain name.
  • Others: There are many other options available to develop a domain only limited by your imagination. Some ideas would be setting up a website that uses content generated by RSS feeds, this will allow you to have dynamically created content that is frequently updated. Another option would be to setup a forum or some other type of site that would allow for community created content for your site.

I could go on with this list for days, but I think this should give you an idea of how to get started developing your domain to generate some organic traffic which will help when selling your domain name for a healthy profit. Check back in a few day as we should have a few of the templates available by then, and some information on the types of packages we will be offering, along with pricing of domain name development.

Increasing Site Interaction With HTTPS

The other day I was reading Tom Critchlow’s post over on the Google analytics blog and after thinking about this a little farther I realized that it goes much farther then just the analytics tracking code. To get everybody caught up here I’m talking about HTTPS security issues with a website, which will effect your results with users of internet explorer the most, with the seemingly over reactive security warnings. I’m sure if you have ever used internet explorer you have seen the pop ups, I know I have many times, even when going to check my email. If you run an eccommerce site this could be disastrous, if your would be customer sees security warnings just before entering their credit card info, they will probably change their mind about making the purchase and likely go to a competitors site to make the purchase. When considering this think about how many sales you are losing every year due to one simple issue that you could probably fix within an hour. While fixing the problem may be simple finding it may prove to be quite a difficult task, but fortunately there are some tools that will help to complete the task.

Alright so of course the first thing you’ll want to do is determine that you have a problem to begin with, and the easiest way to do that is browsing your website with internet explorer, making sure to get all your HTTPS pages. Now comes the fun part, if you find that you have an error somewhere in your page you now have the task of finding it.

This is where the handy tools come in, you can set your browser over to httpwatch, they offer a free basic edition of there software, which should be enough if you only need to do a small site. Once you get it setup you can set it to load up your page, and then just watch and see which part of the page isn’t HTTPS compliant.

Now you should be well on your your to finding your problem but how do you go about fixing them? I will cover a few of the most common problems here, keep in mind that there are many others that could occur. Additionally if you find you are having a problem with your analytics tracking code you could refer to Tom’s blog post for more information on that.

Beyond the tracking code that you probably copy and paste onto your pages, another common error seems to come from images. The best way to overcome this, is when you are linking to images try to just use relative paths, rather than using absolute paths such as: http://example.com/images/picture.jpg If your site is using absolute paths such as the example above you should consider changing that so it looks something like: //example.com/images/picture.jpg

If you have already gone through the basic things that appear right in the source code of the page in question and still don’t see anything it’s time to digg a little bit deeper into your files. In particular your CSS and JavaScript files, these could contain links to images or other files that are not compliant with HTTPS. When going through these you should use the some basic methods as above, for linking to other files.

Hopefully this post will help some of you out there to fix up your site and start increasing conversions, particularly from IE users. As I mentioned above this doesn’t cover 100% of the problems that you may run into, it does cover the most common errors that are found.

Including Keywords in Post Titles

Whether or not to include keywords in your title seems to be a topic of some serious ongoing debate. Of course there are many differing opinions on this topic, some bloggers claim that it doesn’t matter as most traffic will not be coming from the search engines anyway, but rather from others that found your content good enough to include a link back to you. Others claim that you should solely focus on writing for people, and not to even worry about conducting keyword research for your post title. And then you have the search engine optimization folks that including keywords in the title of your post, is the most important aspect of your title.

Now you may be wondering “well who is right and who’s advice should I follow?”, the answer takes a little work of sifting through all that information to find out right actually works and who is right. I have already done this, and would like to present you with my two cents on this topic:

You should include important keywords in your title.

Why?

Because if you do your research right these keywords are what many people are using to find more information about the topic they are interested in. So if you take the time to figure out how people go about finding the information you are writing about you will stand a better chance of getting yourself in front of a larger audience.

This can work no matter where you are writing online or off, performing keyword research to find out what people are actually thinking about. This will help you to better understand your target audience and create a title that had the language they are using.

Taking things a step farther

If you have been around for awhile you may already know how difficult it is to get anywhere when chasing after the most popular keywords. So instead you should focus on some niche phrases instead, which of course may result in less overall traffic, but will result in a better targeted audience. By writing the headline first you will find that you will be able to write much better content to follow.

So in conclusion, it’s my opinion that yes keywords matter, and if possibly you should include them in the title of your article / post. We all know that Google returns search traffic to sites that match the relevant keywords, and you’ll find that most other sites work this way, the more focused you can be to your audience and attracting their attention the better of you will be.

How to Write Killer Headlines

It doesn’t matter whether your a blogger, writing an article, or creating a social bookmark, writing a headline that capture’s you reader’s attention is a must. If your trying to make it online you may already know that it’s growing in difficultly with the always increasing number of blogs, RSS feeds, and bookmarked links you’ll certainly need to write a killer headline.

I’m sure your here to find out how to write a great headline that will draw the attention of as many readers as possible. However there is some bad news there isn’t any one set way to improve your chances of getting clicks through, but there are certainly a few methods to increase your chances of that happening. These may require a little bit of keyword research, but you should have already done that before coming up with the idea of this blog post.

Include hot trends and keywords

Depending on what you are writing for you may want to find out what some hot trends are at the moment, but keep in mind that some trends last longer then others. Even if they are short lived trends you may want to include some of those keywords in your title to create some buzz and really get your readers full attention.

To find out which terms are hot at the moment you can check out the search engines most popular terms to see if any of them fit into your industry. Some other great resources for finding the most popular current topics would be the news headlines, and possibly taking a look at some of the social media websites to see what people are talking about.

When it comes to formatting the headline you should try to narrow it down as much as you can. If you leave it to vague or general you may find that nobody is interested in finding out anymore about your piece of work.

Use superlatives

This tip is probably most relevant when it comes to social bookmarking sites, but the use of a superlative is a great way to get clicks on your headline. It might even be the best way.

For example,

Bad headline: ‘Pay your bills online’

Good headline: ‘The easiest and fastest way to pay your bills’

The first headline is just blah, and the second spices things up a bit with easiest and fastest.

This is by far the quickest way to add some hype to your headlines, but it’s a cheap trick that looks the part. Some people frown upon using this trick while others swear by it. You may find that it works, but this depends largely on who readers are.

When it comes down to it using the words ‘best ever’ or ‘worst’ or ‘super’ or ‘greatest’ in your headline, might do just what you are looking for.

Summarize everything in one sentence

If your article isn’t about the Zune, or you can’t justifiably refer to it as the ‘best’, the next best solution may be to summarize the article in one sentence.

This type of headline writing is great if you write a lot about  science or technology findings; by giving  away the end result of the article upfront you may end up grabbing the reader’s interest and pulling them in to read the rest of the article.

Example,

Bad headline: ‘Scientists conduct cell experiments’

Good headline: ‘Scientists grow human brain cells in a dish’

Instead of relying on keywords to draw the readers interest this style of headline relies on information density to catch the readers interest and draw them in for the rest of the article.

Pose a question

If you would rather not give away the conclusion of your article you may try posing a question for the headline. This also works well if your article is written in a speculative nature.

Debatable or opinion based articles may be written with leading questions as headlines. This helps to  prepare the reader to find out what your argument is on the subject. The headline for these articles can often be contentious or controversial in nature.

Example,

Bad headline: ‘Microsoft Office not much better than OpenOffice.org’

Good headline: ‘Is  Microsoft Office any better than OpenOffice.org?’

Of course this headline reveals what the out come of the article will be, but you will still have to read  it to find the writers opinion on the matter. This is essentially the same type of headline as the summarizing type, with a little controversy built in.

This type of headline will surely gain the attention and opinion of the product fans, and a whole dialog will ensue. If you are looking to create some buzz, this is the way to go.

Use a list

Last but not least the always trusty numbered list headline.

This is also another cheap headline writing trick, but they often prove to be popular with the social bookmarking crowd whether it’s a ‘Top 20 songs from across the globe ‘ or ‘Top 5 headline writing tactics’, it’s be sure to be a hit with those looking for a quick informative read. At the very least you may draw some interest to see what made the number one slot on your list.

You don’t want to abuse this techique though as you will run the risk of being dismissed as spam, but if you can use this method subtly, or give your readers a quick rundown this could be a great headline.
Example,

Bad headline: ‘Great songs of the year’

Good headline: ‘Top 100 songs of 2009′

You’ll find that Top 10 lists are the most popular lists, this can be attributed to them being informative and easily taken in within a few minutes.

By listing specifics, as with the year ’2009′ in the above example, help to make the headline seem more official.

This type of list is often times abused or used as a crutch but can often times gain some serious exposure.

This completes my list of top headline writing techniques, some are crafty, while others are overused, but all of them can be used in certain situations to gain more clicks.

As I mentioned earlier writing a great headline can help you get more click throughs weather it be from  your RSS feed, or getting a popular post on a social bookmarking site. The key is create something that will grab your readers attention and follow it up with great content that will keep them reading throughout the whole thing.

Create Your Headline First, and The Content Will Flow

If you are looking for ways to create better headlines, you might try creating the headline first and then following up with the rest of the post. Before you start writing you usually have a basic idea of what the subject matter of your article / post will be about. So simply take that basic idea and mold it into the perfect headline before diving into the rest of the content.

Why write the headline first?

Of course the headline is the first thing your readers will see and this will determine whether they will click through and read the rest or simply move on to something that better captures their attention. It should clearly communicate what they will find in the post, and what benefit they will receive from reading the rest if any.

As I used to do, I would write the content first and then go back and try to come up with a creative title that would match the content I had just written. The problem is you just wrote that whole piece with some kind of idea of where you wanted to go with it, but you may have included some extras in there. Now you have to go back and think what the best title would be for the piece of content you just created. However if you start out with the title first, you will have clearly defined your path right from the beginning, which will help you to keep in mind where you wanted to go in the first place and keep your content clean and well-structured.

What makes a good headline?

Stay tuned for the rest of this series of blog posts. In the future tomorrows post I will be covering what makes a good headline, but this is certainly one of the main and basic ingredients when it comes to creating great headlines. I will be covering the topic of writing great headlines for the rest of this week, and I will be touching on a bit of everything from what should be included in your headline, to some great formulas to creating great headlines that stand out.
